Preparing for a summer holiday is hard work; dieting and working out for months before flying away, all to make sure you look fabulous in your holiday photos and on the beach in that bikini. So while you’re off enjoying the sun, it’d be a shame if all your hard work goes to waste. Follow these tips to make sure you are still eating healthily and keeping fit when you’re on holiday to keep that summer body all year long!
Healthy Eating
- Plan your holiday meals in advance. Do some research prior to travelling so you have an idea of what the restaurants in the area have on their menus. This way you know the meals you’re eating are somewhat healthy and you don’t have to worry about gorging on greasy fast food when you’re suddenly hungry in the evenings.
- If you are fortunate to have accommodation that includes a kitchen, try making your own meals. You’ll be able to control exactly what is going into your food and control the amounts of salt, sugar and fats in your meals.
- Opt for healthier snacks throughout the day rather than eating sweets or junk foods. Then, if you decide to treat yourself to an unhealthier meal in the evening, you won’t feel so bad for piling on the carbs AND having dessert.
- Try not to go overboard with alcohol. A glass of wine or a cocktail are nice with dinner, but binging isn’t a good idea, especially if you don’t want to waste a day of your holiday feeling hungover!
- Beware of the buffets. Don’t go crazy when you see all those delicious looking foods piled on the buffet spread. Take the time to plan through what foods would be best for you to eat. Using a smaller plate can help you to control your portion sizes and filling up the majority of your plate with fruits and vegetables is bound to keep you feeling full, satisfied and healthy. If there is something naughty that you would like to try, take a small amount of it or share it with someone.
Staying Fit
- If you’re a gym bunny, then it is a good idea to look for accommodation with a gym on the premises. This is great if you want to keep up with your routine and stay fit. The hotel gym may even be able to offer classes so you can have some variety in your fitness routine or just simply try something new.
- Explore the area by foot or bike. Bring your trainers with you and try to see as much of the city you can, without a tour bus. This is a great way to get to know the area and to meet the locals.
- Try something new! Join a local class which you may not have back home and meet new people and instructors for a refreshing outlook on exercise.
- Make use of your environment. If you’re at the beach or on an island holiday, use the water for your workouts, try different water-based sports like surfing or snorkelling. If you’re in the countryside, take this opportunity to go for a long hike, bike or run. If you’re in a city, look for park yoga groups or running clubs to join for the duration of your holiday.
- You’re on holiday, so relax! Listen to your body and if you feel tired, rest and take your time to chill out. Remember to eat healthily and take it easy so you don’t exhaust yourself.
