Please Note: Currently we can only serve patients based in the UK and Ireland

Recent figures from Diabetes UK reveal that 4.3 million people in the UK have received the life-changing news in the last year and that 2.4 million are at an increased risk of developing the disease.

But it’s not too late to get your health back on track.

For some, type 2 diabetes is totally reversible, through making changes to their diets, lifestyles and losing weight. It’s not so simple for others, though, and they may rely on the likes of medicine to get their glucose levels back under control.

GLP 1 receptor agonists are just some of the medications available to help type 2 diabetes patients, and we can prescribe them here at The Slimming Clinic.

What exactly are GLP 1 agonists and how do they work?

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP 1) receptor agonists are medicines used to treat type 2 diabetes – mimicking the hormone GLP-1 that your stomach naturally releases when you eat food.

These medications work in slightly different ways, either:

  • helping your body to make more insulin
  • reducing the amount of glucose your liver produces
  • slowing down the digestion of food so it takes your body longer to absorb sugar from meals

Although they’re mainly used to help manage blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, these medications can also be used to promote weight loss, improve both blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.

Taking GLP 1 agonist medicines

GLP-1 medicines can be taken as an oral medication, but are generally administered via a once weekly injection.

GLP-1 medicines, like Wegovy. Saxenda and Mounjaro, are just one of the solutions, and we can prescribe them here at The Slimming Clinic.

During a consultation with our experts here at The Slimming Clinic, we’ll assess your suitability and only write your prescription once we’re confident it’s the most suitable option for you.

If you choose an injectable medication, your dedicated weight loss doctor will provide all the necessary information and advice about injection sites (you may be asked to inject yourself under the skin on the front of your thighs, your tummy or your upper arms), dosages and when/how often to take the medication.

GLP-1 agonists may not be the best option if you:

  • Are younger than 18
  • Are currently pregnant
  • Have a personal or family history of pancreatitis, type one diabetes or retinopathy
  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer

You can continue taking other medications as normal unless instructed otherwise by your assigned weight loss doctor.
