What is Mounjaro and why can it help with weight loss?

Mounjaro is an innovative option in the fight against obesity and weight management, offering a unique approach to appetite and blood sugar regulation. As a newer addition to weight loss treatments, it has helped individuals achieve their weight loss goals by controlling hunger and improving metabolic health. At The Slimming Clinic, we offer weight loss medication like Mounjaro to assist our patients in managing their weight effectively. This medication works by mimicking natural hormones that regulate appetite and glucose levels, making it easier to adhere to a healthy eating plan and achieve sustainable weight loss.

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection medication for weight loss and weight maintenance in adults. It contains an active substance called tirzepatide. It has been approved for use in the UK since November 2023.

Mounjaro activates the actions of 2 natural substances in your body, called glucose-dependent insulinotrophic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Mounjaro primarily works by regulating your appetite, giving you a sense of fullness, making you feel less hungry and experience less food cravings. This will help you eat less food and support your weight loss in combination with a balanced diet and more movement.

In clinical trials at the 15 mg dose, patients lost an average of 20.9% of their starting body weight compared to 3.1% for placebo medication over 72 weeks.

What are the Mounjaro side effects?

Mounjaro, like all medications, may cause some side effects, though they are typically mild and may diminish as your body adjusts. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, and headaches. To manage nausea, try eating small, regular meals, sipping ginger tea, and staying hydrated. Constipation can be alleviated by increasing your fluid intake, eating more fiber-rich foods, and staying active. For headaches, ensure you are drinking plenty of water, rest in a quiet, dimly lit space, and consider using simple pain relievers like paracetamol.

Injection site reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling may occur. These usually improve with time, but a non-drowsy antihistamine or local cream may help. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, it’s important to contact a healthcare professional.

Gallstones, though less common, can occur, especially with rapid weight loss. To reduce this risk, aim to lose weight gradually and maintain good hydration. If you experience severe abdominal pain or other worrying symptoms, seek medical advice immediately.

Remember, while some of the common side effects can be uncomfortable, they are manageable, and with the right strategies, you can continue your treatment with greater ease.

How does it compare with other treatments?

The latest clinical study by Truveta Research published findings in JAMA Internal Medicine comparing mounjaro vs ozempic. The study analyzed data from over 18,000 overweight and obese patients who began using either Mounjaro or Ozempic between May 2022 and September 2023. Truveta Research employed advanced techniques to ensure a fair and accurate comparison, carefully matching the patient groups taking each medication. The results showed the following findings:

  • 5% Weight Loss: Patients on Mounjaro were 1.8 times more likely to achieve this compared to those on Ozempic.
  • 10% Weight Loss: Mounjaro users were 2.5 times more likely to achieve this milestone.
  • 15% Weight Loss: Mounjaro users were 3.2 times more likely to reach this target.

The study also found that patients on Mounjaro experienced significantly larger reductions in body weight at various timepoints – more about the mounjaro vs ozempic study here.
