Michael's story
Weight Lost: 4.9 stone
I plan to keep the weight off in the same way I lost it; by constantly maintaining the balance between what I eat and how I exercise once you’ve found a routine its fairly easy and I know I can all way get support from the guys at the The Slimming Clinic if I need it.
My weight has gone up and down several times over the years. I’ve always been a bit over weight but I’ve been obese at least twice in the past. I used to feel short of energy so often in my free time, my confidence in both my personal and work life was completely shot to pieces and at the weekends when I should have been going out, making the most of the beautiful surrounding area, socialising with friends or relaxing with family, all I wanted was to stay in bed or sit in front of the TV. This slowly but surely was leading to boredom and border line depression. There just seemed to be some many reasons to just do nothing. Chief amongst them though was after a hard and stressful week at work why shouldn’t I be able to “relax”.
I’ve tried to lose weight several times in the past but each time there’s always been a limiting factor. I tried eating mainly protein, good tasty protein such as a succulent steak or bacon for breakfast every day tends to be expensive and of course as this means it’s not a sustainable solution as soon as you stop this, the weight begins to go back up. I took up rowing for a year once, another year was running & Tae Kwondo but all of these things have situations when they become impractical or at the very least undesirable. The key is purely balance. Being an engineer, what helped me was to apply the first law of thermodynamics,” energy can be transformed from one form to another, but it can never be created nor destroyed” understand this, realise that it applies and things will get easier.
I think I managed to really take action before my weight became to much of a problem to my overall health, however lethargy had started to lead me towards breathing problems, pain when walking , joint pains , physical exertion normally ended in pulled muscles and I seemed to be much more susceptible to cold and illness during down time. Eventually one day it hit me, I’ve had enough of this I want to see things and experience more than just work, there has to be more to life. Everyone at The Slimming Clinic has proved invaluable. I thought the medication was the The Slimming Clinic answer but it proved to only be a small part of what they offered. The most important aspect was the service they provide, where they give a less biased 3rd party point of view, consider general body condition and give guidance on healthy eating. I found the key was to never question there advice, it’s a simple exchange. If you ask a question, the qualified staff who have helped hundreds, will always give you a straight answer so that you can then accept it and work with it. The trouble is you may think you have a friends & family support system who know enough to help but the problem is there not qualified to educate you, and even with good intent there motives or reasoning can often be flawed, which can lead you down a path that could take months to rectify.

Its more of a challenge than a chore. These are my 3 best dieting tips:
Lose the alcohol, there are zero alcohol alternatives and when there isn’t asking for a shandy or a diet coke soon becomes easy and normal.
Exercise, actually gets easier the more you do so keep that in mind when you’re pushing and in pain. Keep the routine and before you know it the same amount of exercise maintains your weight but is no longer a chore it just part of the day. And the key to exercise is to understand it not just something that happens in a gym. For it to be sustainable it needs to not be boring make it’s a functional part of your day like cycling to work or walking your dog.
Know what your food is. Focus on good quality food and drink. Fizzy drinks and snack foods are so heavy processed no one expects the average consumer to actually understand what every ingredient are, but there are defiantly production processes and ingredients that are worth avoiding. So if you don’t know simply find out or avoid it.

My main downfall when it comes to diet has always been beer! I’m more a savoury person generally so chocolate, biscuits, and sweets have never really been a problem, Sausage rolls, ice-cream and pizza where more of a challenge especially in the quantity’s I used to consume them. I mainly avoid crisps , fried food , fizzy drinks. The aim is not to make life impossible just to understand what’s happening, why and how to keep a balance that keeps you happy and healthy. To anyone wanting to lose a large amount of weight I would say that perseverance is character, learning to eat and exercise is a skill. No one has a perfect skill merely a degree of ability but anyone can learn. Furthering your understanding of this skill and hence your capacity, the The Slimming Clinic can help you with if you let them. However you still have to supply the perseverance. The best thing I have found about losing weight is the stability of my moods. During tough times, things don’t seem to effect me as much and this strength of character pays dividends. My body confidence is rising every day (even if only little by little) I can wear nicer clothes , feel at home where I used to feel out of place.

On an average day I now eat 2 weetabix for breakfast with skimmed milk (always as soon as I’ve woken up). A single normal sized ham sandwich, banana, apple and sometimes a small piece of flap jack or a hand full of nuts for lunch. For supper, a small meat pie, assorted steamed vegetables, and Greek yoghurt for dessert. I think my trousers where the biggest boost for me. I refused to buy new clothes for most of the duration of the diet as I didn’t see the point so I kept wearing belts and even braces. Eventually I reached a point where pinching out 6-7 inches off your trousers with a belt, or even elasticated joggers just wasn’t working anymore. So I went shopping. Suddenly finding you can actually not only buy clothes that fit you in fashionable shops, and in medium sizes. It was monumental. I plan to keep the weight off in the same way I lost it; by constantly maintaining the balance between what I eat and how I exercise. Once you’ve found a routine its fairly easy and I know I can always get support from the guys at the The Slimming Clinic if I need it."
