Why should I check my BMI?

There are a number of health reasons why you should check your BMI:

  • Identify BMI Related Health Issues
Those with a higher BMI run an increased risk of other serious diseases and health conditions such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke.
  • Overall Health Picture
Checking your BMI helps Doctors to get a better overall picture of your health and wellbeing.
  • Tackle Mental Health Issues
Having a higher BMI and being obese can lead to poorer mental health issues such as low mood, low confidence, anxiety, depression and more.

What do my BMI results mean?

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) results offer a general measure of whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on your height and weight. Here’s what the results typically mean according to the latest NHS BMI ranges:

    • Underweight (BMI < 18.5): You may need to gain weight for better health. A healthcare provider can help determine the best way to increase weight safely.
    • Normal weight (BMI 18.5 – 24.9): Your weight is considered healthy, though maintaining a balanced diet and active lifestyle is important.
    • Overweight (BMI 25 – 29.9): This is described as overweight and you may be at increased risk for health problems like heart disease or diabetes.
    • Obese (BMI of 30 or above): Your weight may pose a significant health risk, and it’s important to consult a healthcare provider for personalised advice on weight loss and improving overall health.

Remember, BMI doesn’t consider muscle mass, bone density, or other factors, so it’s just one of many tools to assess health. Always consult a professional for a complete health assessment.

Our Doctors can evaluate you for weight loss medication if your BMI is 27 or higher. If you’re interested in beginning a weight loss programme, you can either schedule an online weight loss consultation with one of our specialised weight loss Doctors or request a prescription through our online pharmacy. Each request will be carefully reviewed by our expert clinicians before any medication can be prescribed.

If your BMI is lower than 27 and you would still like further advice about a weight loss programme, please book an appointment with one of our GMC-registered Doctors who can provide you with expert guidance.

If your BMI is 27 or higher then you can be considered for a programme with us by booking an appointment with one of our GMC-registered Doctors, or by ordering your weight loss medication from our online pharmacy.
