Weight loss pills are not prescribed by doctors on the NHS, but they can be prescribed by specialist GMC-registered doctors in weight loss clinics.

The NHS does not currently prescribe weight loss medication, so you cannot get it from your GP. Weight loss pills at The Slimming Clinic are always prescribed by one of our doctors after taking into account your medical history and suitability. We always recommend only using weight loss medication that has been recommended and prescribed to you by a specialist weight loss doctor.

At The Slimming Clinic we prescribe both Phentermine and Diethylpropion, which are classed as ‘specials’ weight loss medication by the NHS. ‘Specials’ are special-order, unlicensed medications that are made to meet the individual needs of a specific patient.

Unlicensed medicines are prescribed in clinical situations where it is judged that, on the evidence gathered at a patient consultation, the use of the medicine is in the best interest of the patient. Unlicensed prescription weight loss medication can be used when there is no licensed alternative available to meet the needs of the patients and the benefits of the medication outweighs the potential risks of the treatment.

This is why we offer all our patients an initial weight loss consultation with The Slimming Clinic where we assess your overall health, well-being and your clinical need for weight loss treatment.

If both you and your weight loss doctor agree that our medication is the best course of action for your health and well-being, they will prescribe them to you at your local clinic.
