Put down the weights, jump off the treadmill and dismount the exercycle! The weather is looking absolutely gorgeous right now and there are lots of ways you can get yourself out there to make the most of it whilst still getting your daily dose of exercise. Here’s a handy little breakdown of how you can move your inside workout to the great outdoors.

Running

Not only can you burn more calories running outside, it’s also a lot more appealing to look at than staring at the wall or at your fellow gym goers. It also means that you’ll be able to change your route which can keep you motivated in the heat and if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea you can go for a jog on the beach Madonna-style! Even if you aren’t into running, taking walks out by yourself, the dog, a friend or partner, can leave you surprised at how much of a workout a little stroll can actually be when the sun is beating down.

Yoga

There is a form of yoga called Bikram that involves being in a boiling hot room (usually around 40 °C) whilst performing over 25 poses. Going to the local park or into your garden with your yoga mat isn’t quite in the same ball park, but it can’t be denied that being outside with the birds singing won’t help you relax just that little bit more.

Swimming

Who can really resist the thought of jumping into a deep blue ocean to cool off from the heat? The next best thing: an outdoor swimming pool or, permitting your level of ability in the water, a lake that lets people swim in its waters. This is another activity that can be enjoyed both by you yourself and also in the company of others, probably not a good idea to take the dog on this one though!

Cycling

Just the same as with running, as long as you’ve got yourself a set of wheels you can change up your usual routine with ease. Be sure that you have the correct equipment though and always check the chain before you set off. There are plenty of cycling routes that you can find here.

Outdoor Gyms

If perhaps you aren’t feeling too confident on using bits and pieces around the park to get your workout done, don’t fear! A lot of parks now have outdoor gyms that are designed with everyone in mind no matter what your age or ability. They also have handy instructions on the side of them showing you just how to use them. Not only are they outside, free AND fun to use, but some of the gyms also have BMI charts and scales so you can keep a track of your progress there and then. Check out the website here to find an outdoor gym local to you.

So there are just a few ideas of how you can get out of the gym and into the sun without letting your workout routine suffer. As residents of the UK, you’ve got to make the most of any Summer weather that we get. So get up and get outside!
